Drape it, don checks and try a purple pout this season! Deputy editor Lucy Ahern brings you the top five Autumn/Winter trends of the moment, inspired by the international runways and the world’s biggest fashion icons. We hope they inspire you to try something new!
1. Drape it
Think blazers, coats and varsity bombers; this look is wonderfully easy and works with almost any style! The loose layering adds a carefree vibe to your look and has been seen at fashion weeks around the world, on everyone from Australia’s own Nicole Warne of Gary Pepper Vintage (pictured below) to Solange Knowles and style queen, Christine Centenera.
2. Check yourself
The nautical stripe trend has earned itself some serious competition! Checks have been on trend for a while now, but they are showing no signs of fading. Big and bold at Marni, ’60s inspired at Louis Vuitton, or sleek and subtle on the Sportsmax runway, there’s a check pattern for every taste.
If you’re feeling brave, try clashing two different sizes or colours of checks for a gutsy take on the trend!
3. (Long) Shorts
Whether you choose Bermuda-style loose fits or super skinny, leather or geo-print, it’s all about the shorts! But we’re not talking your regular denim cut-offs – think knee-skimming, flattering cuts. Team them with platform sandals for a casual look, or slip on some heels for a delicious juxtaposition.
4. Matte nails
Leave the shine behind and embrace the nail trend taking over fashion catwalks. Matte nail polishes are quickly becoming a runway fave, seen at many shows of late, including Aurelio Costarella and Karen Walker. Nail art favourite Ciate recently added a blackboard-style manicure kit to their impressive range, letting you get creative with your nails and pen your own designs.
Soften the look a little by leaving your tips glossy, as seen on Kaelen’s NYFW runway.

5. Purple pouts
They’re rich, seductive and edgy! Dark purple lips have recently been seen on models at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent fashion shows. This perfect Winter hue is also a favourite of Amanda Seyfried and Azealia Banks, who even collaborated with MAC to create her perfect shade!
Try wearing it with red or orange clothing for an eye-catching contrast, and remember to keep the rest of your makeup simple!
