Downton Abbey fans worldwide today joined together for a celebratory cheer, with Carnival Films’ announcement of a fashion collection inspired by the hit show. And then Maggie Smith (aka the Dowager Countess) shot them a scathing look and they all shushed.
Ever lusted over one of Lady Mary’s lacy frocks? Or do the Dowager’s famous hats tickle your fancy? (BYO attitude.) And remember that time Sybil causing a stir wearing – of all things – pants?
For all those who ever envied the beautiful costumes of the equally beautiful Grantham ladies that walk those hallowed halls, similar garments and accessories will soon be available for purchase, from the . With all the Gatsby fever currently inspiring fashion designers everywhere, it’s no surprise this has got fans excited for the chance to dress like their favourite family – think luscious silks, brocade and intricate beading. You can also replicate the fresh English rose (with a hint of running-away-with-the-chauffeur) with the planned line of accompanying beauty products, and even write letters on stationary just like theirs.
But why so long in the making – surely they could have cashed in on the show’s success long before now? Executive producer Gareth Nearne explained to CNBC:
In retail terms, the first series launched the program and the brand, the second year ratified it and the show didn’t even hit its high point in the US until this year when series three ended. It’s very rare for a British drama to have this much retail potential and merchandising value [in the US].
It’s a very slow burn the moment you get into retail, it’s extremely cautious, it has to test the established brand. No one wants to launch products if the show’s going to be a flop.
A range of home wares, furniture and wallpaper lines have also been confirmed, so you can deck out your place just like the Grantham’s home – except maybe minus the valet. And the rolling greenery. And chandeliers. But, you know, it’s a cracking good start.
Unfortunately there’s no word yet as to when or where the products will actually be available for purchase, but all we know is we’re damn excited.
The fourth season of Downton Abbey is currently being filmed in at Berlshire’s Highclere Castle, and should hit UK screens in September this year.
